Top 5 TV Shows of 2022

Streaming and TV shows dominated in 2022, here are some of the best from the past year.

Television shows and streaming services have become rather high quality this past year, and although I didn’t have a chance to review all of them I wanted to highlight some of the best from this past year. These can include shows that had their first debut season or are further along in the run. These are the shows that I definitely think you should check out this year!

5. Severance

Severance was a bit of a slow burn in its early episodes but it never stopped being captivating and intriguing. With a unique concept of separating your work life from your personal life fused with themes of Office Space and working class equality, this was a thrilling ride from start to finish. As the show crescendos into its final episodes it becomes some of the best television this year has produced. It was highly original and thought-provoking and left plenty of questions to be explored for its newly green lit season two. I would give this initial season an (A -).

4. House of the Dragon

After finishing with a whimper in the final season of Game of Thrones, fans were left longing for a return to Westeros that captured the spirit of its earlier seasons. House of the Dragon deftly delivered a fantastic initial season that sets the stage for many conflicts, scheming, and great bloody action to come. It maintains the political schematics and familial tension that made the original show so captivating and granted fantastic performances in Paddy Considine in particular. I would give this initial season an (A)!

3. Andor

Andor Season 1 Review

Star Wars has had its ups and downs in the past few years but nothing has elevated the franchise quite like Andor did. This is a show that had no right to be this good, and yet it is arguably the best thing that has come out of the new era of Star Wars. It tells its own original story, filled with compelling characters, with grand scale action sequences all without overtly tying it in to some grand narrative. There were some standout episodes, particularly the heist in Episode 6, the prison break in Episode 9, and the final showdown in Episode 12. I cannot wait to see how things wrap up in season 2.

2. Stranger Things

Stranger Things Season 4 Review

When I saw the first trailer premiere set to the tune of Separate Ways by Journey, I knew that Stranger Things fourth season was going to deliver big. My goodness did it deliver. The story elevates the lore of the show and contains a central mystery that is one of the series best. It pairs the characters off well allowing us to be introduced to some new comers while also deepening our understanding of the existing ones. The suspense and action are nothing short of a high level filmmaking quality, with sequences that are seared into my mind forever. This was the show at its most ambitious and certainly paid off! Just one more season to see how everything pays off.

1. Better Call Saul

Breaking Bad is my favorite TV show of all time, and when the prequel series of Better Call Saul was announced I was initially skeptical. Over the course of its six seasons, Better Call Saul proved time and time again that it was on par if not better than its parent series. While certainly different than Breaking Bad, the show delivers a magnificent character study and drama through Jimmy McGill who later becomes Saul Goodman. The evolution of a sleazy lawyer trying to prove himself to full fledged mob boss lawyer to again criminal on the run was phenomenal character work and unlike anything I have ever seen before. This show had me on the edge of the seat with each episode, captivated by its character, enthralled in its journey, and emotional at its conclusion. Better Call Saul is one of the all time greatest TV shows of all time and its final 6th season cemented itself in eternity forever.
